UN Careers: Job Categories, Requirements and Applications

UN-System Organizations and MOALI’s Coverage

The UN system includes funds and programmes, specialized agencies and related organizations with their own recruitment arrangements. The UN family directory explains those relationships. A vacancy with a UN-system employer does not necessarily use the UN Secretariat’s grades, contracts or selection process.

MOALI covers selected official UN-system career sources. Check the employer’s website for additional openings and the latest vacancy details. This page uses vacancy information collected and stored by MOALI. The organizations above have current vacancies in that collection; they are not a complete list of UN-system employers.

UN Job Categories and Grades: P, D, NO, G and FS

A category describes a type of staff role; a grade identifies a level within that employer’s system. The UN Secretariat career options and ICSC staff categories explain these common labels:

Staff categoryWhat the category describes
P — Professional; D — Director: internationally recruited professional and higher-level roles, including specialist, managerial and director posts.
NO — National Professional Officer: professional roles drawing on national knowledge and expertise. Read the employer’s nationality requirements for the particular vacancy.
G or GS — General Service: locally recruited administrative, technical and support roles, at headquarters as well as field offices.
FS — Field Service: a UN staff category for operational, technical and support work in field missions. It does not mean every job outside headquarters.

In P-3, NO-B or G-5, the number or letter indicates a level within the category, not how long the appointment lasts. UNICEF’s category guide describes its International Professional, National Officer and General Service levels. The World Bank Group careers FAQ describes its own grade structure. Similar-looking labels at different employers do not establish equivalent roles or eligibility.

Staff Jobs, Consultancies and Internships

Staff appointments and consultancies

A staff appointment and a consultancy can involve similar subject matter but different terms. For example, WHO describes staff roles alongside time-limited, project-focused consultancies, which are outside its Staff Rules and Regulations (WHO careers). For a consultancy or individual contractor assignment, read the terms of reference, deliverables and payment terms rather than relying on a staff-grade comparison.

Individual contractors

The Secretariat’s applicant guide distinguishes specialized advisory work by consultants from individual contractor tasks, which can include translation or editing. Both are described there as non-staff opportunities.

Internships

Internships are a separate route with their own entry requirements and conditions. UNICEF’s category guide describes practical work assignments for eligible students. The specific notice sets eligibility, duration and financial arrangements.

UN Recruitment Terms: Rosters and Temporary Openings

Temporary job opening (TJO): the UN Secretariat’s applicant guide describes these as staff positions available for less than one year. A P-3 opening can therefore be temporary: the grade and appointment duration describe different things. Use the notice’s stated duration and applicant restrictions when assessing that opening.

Roster: in the UN Secretariat’s recruitment process, recommended candidates may be retained for possible selection for similar functions at the same level and category. Roster membership is not an appointment. The applicant guide also explains that some Secretariat field-operation openings recruit only from an existing roster; check whether you hold the membership the notice requires.

National and international recruitment: these describe recruitment arrangements, not seniority. At WHO, National Professional Officers work in the country of their nationality, General Service staff are local residents or nationals, and internationally recruited professionals serve across the world. A country shown on MOALI tells you where the vacancy is based; it does not establish who may apply. Read the employer’s express nationality, residence or other applicant restrictions.

How to Find UN Vacancies on MOALI

Search by title, organization, country or location, then narrow the results with the filters. Newest orders vacancies by when they were added to MOALI; Closing soon uses their recorded deadlines. Country and duty-station links filter this UN list. Clear removes the search and filters and returns to the first page.

Open a job’s details on MOALI, then use its official application destination to check the complete announcement and current closing date. MOALI does not receive applications or make selection decisions. Submit through the employer’s recruitment system, following that vacancy’s instructions.

UN Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Languages

Check the required degree level and subject, relevant experience and its duration, language proficiency, and any limits on who may apply. Where a notice permits an alternative combination of education and experience, use that stated alternative; do not assume one exists. The Secretariat’s applicant guide distinguishes mandatory required criteria from desirable criteria. Desirable criteria can still affect shortlisting. Address both accurately rather than treating a desirable language or skill as irrelevant.

Illustrative example — not a real vacancy or applicant

Imagine a notice requiring two years of experience preparing and analysing programme monitoring reports, with English required and French desirable. A job title alone would not show that experience.

If your actual work from January 2023 to December 2025 included preparing monthly monitoring reports, checking partners’ figures against agreed indicators and explaining discrepancies to a programme team, describe those tasks and dates. Identify your own contribution. That gives a reviewer concrete evidence to compare with the reporting requirement. Separately describe the work you can do in English and your actual French proficiency; do not turn conversational French into a claim of fluency.

For this example, check the following before submitting:

  1. Confirm that your qualification matches the notice’s education requirement and that you meet its applicant restrictions. Relevant reporting experience alone does not establish this.
  2. Enter the dates, reporting duties and language abilities accurately in the employer’s application fields. Include evidence for any desirable criteria you meet, without claiming experience you do not have.
  3. Check the requested documents and closing date on the official notice, complete the required fields and confirm submission in the employer’s system.

The UN Recruitment Process: Assessments and Interviews

The UN Secretariat recruitment process includes application evaluation, an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview. Evaluation considers education, experience and skills. An assessment may be a written test, simulation or case study; the interview explores skills through previous experience. These stages apply to the recruitment route described there, not automatically to every employer or vacancy on this page.

UNESCO’s published process, for example, compares applications and pre-screening answers with the vacancy requirements. Preselected candidates may receive a recorded interview or written assessment, followed by a panel interview for those shortlisted and reference/background checks for candidates under further consideration.

Use the recruiting organization’s instructions and status messages to understand your own application. Where a roster outcome is offered, read the notification’s scope and conditions rather than interpreting it as a job offer. Assessment invitations, roster membership and selection are different outcomes.

Official Applications and UN Recruitment Scams

The United Nations fraud alert states that the United Nations does not charge recruitment fees. That notice concerns United Nations recruitment; check other employers’ own official instructions and fraud notices. Do not pay an intermediary promising a UN job or send personal documents through an unverified offer.
